96 wolverine carb trouble
#1
I have a 96 wolverine that had heavy varnish in the carb from gas left in it. I took it apart and with carb cleaner, resurrected it. The jets all appeared okay, after the cleaning. I bought a repair cd and was a bit disappointed when it didn't cover the yfm350fxh specifically. My carb has never been opened before and everything was/is stock. My needle valve was backed out 4 3/4 turns. The manual says it should be 2, i returned it to 4 3/4 position. The trouble is now that it dies when snapping the throttle. It idles fine and the choke can be pushed in without affecting anything. But when you push the throttle for a quick snap, it dies. If you leave the choke out, the throttle can be snapped with no hesitation. All holes in the carb are cleaned and all jets are clear, all the diaphrams were in good shape. My carb has a big diaphram on the top if it, not a connecting arm, as my cd repair manual shows. Can anyone give me any insight as to what may be the trouble? Does anyone have the info as to how many turns the pilot and needle jet should be? Thanks for any advice.

If everything on the machine is stock, the fuel screw should be between 2 and 2-3/4 turns out probably. They're usually a little lean from the factory, but not so lean that it shoudl be 4 turns out.
But for the hesitation you're getting, i'm pretty sure it's your accelerator pump. I'm not familiar with the wolverine's carb, but if it's similar to the warrior's, then there is a small spring that sits in the float bowl in a recess, that is supposed to return the accelrator pump plunger to it's normal position. Almost everyone doesn't see that spring fall out, and it never goes back in the first time they work on the warrior's carb. Maybe if you can get some pictures I or someone else could help you out more also.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have pulled up the carb pics on my cd. There is nothing about a pump accelerator. I will try to attach the clipboard file. If it doesn't work here, i can try to send it to you for a look see. This particular carb has a piston valve and a spring above it as well as a diaphram. The diaphram and spring were okay. No signs of wear. Thanks. Hmmm....doesn't appear as though i can send the pic file with this e-mail.

Hmm, i'm not sure then, it doesn't sound like the wolvy carb is the same as any others I've worked on before. Hopefully somebody else will read this and be able to help you, but i don't think i'm going to be much help anymore.

Go there to find your carb.
When you open the top big black cap there is a little o-ring, make sure it gets put back in. A good way to check if the plunger is working...there is a kidney shaped hole on the top of the intake side..blow in that (when the cap is on) and you should hear it move up and then down. Also make sure your gas tank and fuel shut off valve are clean.

Thanks for the great help guys. The O-ring you mentioned was deteriorated and i replaced it. I also put the pilot screw at 2 1/2 turns, despite the fact as i mentioned it seated at 4 3/4 turns. Fired it up today and she's purring like a kitten. Thanks for all the assistance. Now i'm on to my dad's timberwolf with high revving idling troubles.
