Default recon dies on hills

My bro-n-law bought a used recon cheaply, probably around '02. It looks pretty good but has been well used, the engine seems tired and it smokes. Aside from that, when the bike is at angles of say 30 deg or steeper, the engine wants to die. He can keep it from dieing by pulling the choke but still has to baby it a bit to get it to plane out again when off of the incline. I've not fiddled with it but suggested the float level may be off in the carb. Before I look at it, I was wondering if anything else could cause this problem or if anyone had experienced something similar.

Thanks,
Rodney

A good place to start is to clean the carb and adjust the float. The smoking probably means it is time to do the top end.

Does he have an aftermarket pipe or something on it? If so the owner might not of re-jetted properly. Do the easy stuff first though like the guys above reccomended.

I had the same problem. Take the carb bowl off and check the little plastic round piece at bottom of bowl. Mine had came loose and was restricting fuel flow. When you put it back together be sure to put the bowl on with carb upside down.
