I think I saw a thread that said 1.7 qts.
I run amsoil 0w40 in all my powersports toys and it works excellent. Heres a link. This stuff is amazing, works in motors, transmissions, wet clutches, cold weather, hot weather.....

Pay 10 bucks and you get everything at wholesale for 6 months. Just become a preferred customer.

I'd just run up to the honda dealer or any bike shop and get motorcycle oil, maybee even an auto parts store might have it, I use Mobil1 10-40 synthetic motorcycle oil, just remember NEVER USE CAR OIL (regular oil).

You have the right to spend $8.00 a quart as recommended above but your motor will not be any better off than spending $2.00 a quart for Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo in 15-40 non synthetic. Now if you are going to make a habbit of starting and riding in below freezing temperatures then either of the above in full synthetic 5-40 will start easier and warm up quicker. This sport is expensive enough without dumping money down the oil recycler hole. With oil filter change my 400EX will take a little over 2 quarts.

There was a post recently on how to do an oil change (volumes, what to drain, etc.). We went into some detail, and it has some real good info that might save you some grief. When I find it, I will post a link!

Use regular ol dino oil (4 stroke motorcycle oil) if you like to powershift your 400EX. You can use synthetic oil but if you like to powershift alot (like while dragracing) you will get the slippy slips.........

In regards to the Maxima oil, which weight do you prefer? Right now, I run a Mobile 1 synthetic 15W50. I was thinking of switching to Maxima and running the 10W in the colder months and the 15W in the summer months. Any thoughts or does it even matter? Thanks for the advice!

Maxima's 10W40 Extra is a "light" 40. It is spec'd right on the border between 30 and 40, so you could also call it a "heavy" 30 if you like. I think of it as a "35".
Around here, the winters are mild (except for this year) and the summers are very hot, so I run 10W40 in winter and 15W50 in summer. In Ohio, I would run 10W40 in summer and probably 5W30 in winter. Maxima needs to come out with a 5W30 Extra, and maybe even a 0W30 for those in the really frozen north.
