Where is exaust noise leagally measured??

I pose this question because I have just changed from my stock pipe to my new LRD pipe and it is louder.
And I was wondering how many of us have been stoped,measured and posibly been fined by the noise cops ie-(e-men). And is it getting worse?
Just trying to get a feel of what to look out for.

i've ridden at the oregon dunes and the cops there are getting way out of hand. in florence you really have to stay away from the main area to aviod them. some of the other areas aren't too bad.
they do have a standardized test, the sound pressure level meter is held level w/ the muffler, about 2ft from it, and at about a 45 degree angle to the length wise axis of the machine. they then hold a inductive tachometer in the sparkplug wire and rev the motor to about 2000 rpm... i think, and hold it there (i did not see this part directly) mine was a coutesy check. and i failed by 2 db.. i needed to re-pack. you may not be so fortunate. i'm also going to add a copper pipe elbow to point the outlet at the ground. being on sand would really help to pass too.
funny how cops never get on harley riders about the sound level.

Does anybody have this in writing from the state?,That test sounds a little gray.And could probably be beat in court.I know I would fail it.Anything but stock would probably fail.God help the 250r's Their off track days seem to be numbered.How much is the fine??........IS it easer just to pay it to have some real fun??
Has anybody gotten a tow in and out of the area from a friend to get past the check points?
Am I going to have to carry my stock slip on just to get in and out of these areas?

I believe you can get the exact test procedure from the forest service, but the previously described method is very close to the one they use. I have seen elbows do some good, usually a 2 to 3 db drop, but only on 2 strokes. The outlet on a 4-stroke may be too large to dampen the sound any. Good luck towing your bike in, if seen, thet will find you on the way out and test you, if you refuse it's like an admission of guilt, and they'll ticket you by saying they saw you riding around, and could "hear you for miles". as for the 250r's, i know the fmf powercore (what i run) and turbine core will pass so will many others. the only guys that have a real problem are the ones on the LT500r's anything but stock will not pass. alsoi banshees with various combos- toomey silencers- for example will fail it too.
if you know the place well, wait for the cops to leave, go ride, and stay well away from thier normal patrol area.
