Thoughts on my EX build...
#1
Hi guys,
I'm planning on redoing the engine on my 99 ex. It's mysteriously getting rid of a little oil, not smoking or leaking though.
Anyway, I was going to just rering it and see if it would stop using oil but I decided to do a build while I'm in there.
So far I'm looking at:
Wiseco 440 big bore kit
Stage 2 hotcams camshaft
DIY Head porting
The 440 kit I am looking at is this eBay 440 kit - click
The price is attractive unless you guys can recommend a better place.
There are also several places on ebay for hotcams at around 125.00, is there a better place to get them close to that price?
Will the stock clutch hold this power OK?
I'm also wondering about the 12.5:1 compression on this kit as I live and ride at very high elevations. 7,000-10,000ft.
Any suggestions or resources for the build? I plan on doing all the work myself except the machine work, I'll have my machinist put in the sleeve. I would like to know what to do with the head porting. I know you can actually do more harm than good if you don't know what you're doing, I just want to do a light polish/port job if I can get some direction on what to do.
Also, I see on hotcams site a "Stage 3 cam" has anyone used this with good results? I'm thinking it may be a little too "race-only" and I'm looking to just make this a nice sand and trail machine. Just thought I'd ask.
Thanks!
Greg

Just something to think about, I have always heard the 416 and 426 kits are the way to go, just as powerful with better reliability. I used to have a 440ex, the torque was great and all, but to be honost I wouldn't do it again.
As for the clutch holding together, yeah it should hold up fine if the clutch is in good shape as is. If it is the original clutch tho, it might be do for a new one anyhow?

Thanks for the reply man.
Why wouldn't you do it again? Was yours unreliable or problematic?
Do I have to bore out the cylinder for 426 or do you get a sleeve? Who has the best deal?
Thanks for the info. I definitely want to bump up compression a little and add a cam, but I definitely want it to be reliable, that is priority.
Thanks for the ideas, keep em comin!!!

I wouldn't do it again because the money spent wasn't worth it. My 440ex, with a cam and some bolt on goodies would run with a stock raptor when it was fresh. After some beating it had hard enough trouble doing that. IMO, the money would have been better spent on a better machine. It was still fairly reliable, but not as a stock one was.
I'm pretty sure you can just bore a cylinder out to a 416 and/or 426. There's alsorts of places out there to get prices from, I normally just order Wiseco parts from Rockymountainatv.com. I would say with a 426 kit and cam you should still have a very reliable machine if done right.
But remember, the 400ex is what it is. It's not going to be a full blown MX machine like the 450's, or a drag bike like the big bores, but it is a great trail bike that is as good as any.

Ok thanks, I'll look at rocky mtn.
Hanging with a stock rappy is pretty impressive to me, I'll be impressed if it comes close to that. It just does not have enough snort in the sand. It would start bogging out in 1st gear even without sand paddles, when climbing. I know it will just be that much worse with the added traction of sand tires.
Like I said it needs rebuilt anyway and I thought I would try to pull a little more power out of it while I'm there.
Did you run a cam with your setup?
Thanks

Yeah I had a Web Low-Mid range cam and a Wiseco 440 kit for internal mods. Along with a White Bros. Pipe, Uni Filter, K&N airbox lid, and of course fine tuned jetting, it ran pretty good especially on the bottom. But like I said, if I was going to do it over again I'd a just done a 416 or 426 kit.
BTW, I still have the list of mods for it in my bio.
