Batttery Frozen solid, best place to buy a new one?
#1
Hey, my battery froze in my 1988 Honda Foreman trx350D. I suppose it was due for a change anyhow, it was two years old. I recently learned that if a battery is not fully charged, it freezing temperature increases. (due to the change of its specific gravity) I live in Minnesota, and for the past 3 weeks its been -15 to -35 below zero.
Anyway, I know now to make sure the battery is fully charged when it gets so cold out.
Does anyone know of a cheap place to buy a new battery for my ATV?
I check with Mills Fleet Farm, and for a sealed battery its $67!!. Should I expect to pay that much, or does anyone know of a cheaper place.
Thanks!!

$67 is in the ballpark for a sealed AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery. I paid $65 shipped for my AGM on-line. A conventional (wet) battery will be cheaper if you are looking to save some money.
On a side note, when I lived in Minnesota the battery in my '95 Ranger froze solid one night. The sides of the battery were bulged out from the expansion as it froze. Amazingly the battery case didn't crack. I brought it in the house, thawed it out, and charged it up. 2 1/2 years later when I traded the truck in, that battery was still going strong. You can freeze a battery solid and not kill it. I've seen it/done it...

If your battery dies it will freeze. Mine did about 3 weeks ago. I brought it in the house charged it and its been fine ever since. I think I was lucky but for $65 I'd give it a try.

I believe the battery that you had in you Honda would be a Yausa. That is a very good battery. I
live in Maine and ordered the exact same from California over the internet on a Tuesday, and had
it on my doorstep on a Thursday. Total cost $55 dollars. My honda is 14 years old now and still
only 2 batteries. Do and internet search for the Yausa..
