How big of a hole did you drill in the gas cap?
I would pull your jets out and look for debris since it will cost nothing and make sure the hole in the gas cap is filtered somehow.
The fact that it runs ok for a few seconds then goes to crap is interesting and indicates an electrical problem. Do you have access to another cdi to test?
Also, make sure your plug wires snap tight. Make sure they don't vibrate loose and jump around because they are worn out.
To be honest, it sounds like spark timing is getting erradic after a few seconds and that would most likely be CDI.

does it start puffing black smoke when it starts sputtering? sounds like it gets totally fat to me . maybe the vibration from the engine running is making the carb overflow down the throat. I would pull the carb carefully without turning it upside down and pull the bowl without dumping it and make sure there isnt a small pudle of water in the bowl which gets sucked up when you rev it . you can see the water because it as is seperates from gas. have had it happen when someone washes their bike alot. also make sure your main jet isnt laying in the bowl as I have seen that happen before also. you should also pull the float needle and make sure there arent any foreign objects or debris which could keep the fuel from shutting off.

I hope it isn't the CDI it worked fine when it came off of Seth's bike. I wouldn't think it would just go bad because it is on his bike but if it is I am sorry.
i was having the same problem when i got your cdi it did get better for a little bit but it still sputterd i hope its not the cdi to beacuse i have no idea where im going to get another one before friday lol.

I had the same problem when I piped and jetted my bike. Try switching your jets from one side to the other, they are threaded the same and will go into the wrong holes. When I jetted mine it did the exact same thing cause I put the jets in the wrong holes.

the needle goes into the main jet right.
someone also told me the batery might be bad but it cranks the bike over fine i have connected to the battery tender and its on green saying that i have a full charge so i guess its ok.
also do you guys think it might be a loose ground cable i have no idea where this cable is thou.
one thing i should add i once got the bike stuck in water upto the seat but i let dry and it started up fine this was about a year and a half ago and since then i replaced the cdi and rectifier with a diffrent set and cleaned up all the terminals im running out of ideas.
