Upgrading a 2001 ds to a modern model?
#1
can you do the following to an older model ds to make it more up to date?
1. connect a tach into the old harness (coils, but where at)
2.headlight conversion I am already aware of
3.will a newer swingarm fit into the frame even if it is a little shorter?
4.will a 2001 axle fit into a more modern carrier and work with the newer lighter hubs or are the splines different?
5. The other was going to be could you wire a newer cdi into the ds, but would be dumb when you could buy a vortex or other aftermarket cdi.
6. any other thing that I am not aware of besides the shortening a little big and the weight saved with the hubs?

Yes you could.
1. connect the tach to the negative side of the coil and run a 12 volt source to the tach
2. you already know this
3. Yes a 04 and later swingarm will fit.
4. Yes a 2000 and later axle will fit a later carrier. They never changed.
5. Yes you could wire a newer cdi into the stock harness, but you could also buy aftermarket like you stated.
6. Other things would be newer style front hubs. Newer sprocket hub. They changed the bolts from 04 and later, they are smaller.
Maybe some baja x front shocks if you desired. That would really be about it though, for the most part.

I am just getting some ideas together, but the splines match up on all of the axles so I could just go and put a newer sprocket hub on the old axle along with a new brake hub and newer axle nut...also how much better are the baja shocks when compared to the older shocks and is the newer swingarm setup alot lighter when compared to the older one or could you recommend an aftermarket one for me...I am trying to get some ideas in my head for the future and get my ds more up to date with the newer models....I really like your ds shes pretty sweet looking, what brand swingarm and + wat are you currently running with what a 730...thanks for the reply amd

The hubs are splined the same but you have to use the newer spacers. The baja x shocks give you more adustability then the older ones. There is a pretty good difference in weight from the older swing arms to the newer ones. Yes you could put the new sprocket hub on the old axle. The swing arms on the 04 and later are an 1" shorter.

I know on the 2000 they needed to be bleed for the oil system and the early models didn't have the newer stuff like my 01 lacks...Thanks on the info amd I will keep that in mind and polaris I am just about positive a newer ds engine will fit into the frame, but you will need a newer wiring harness for the hookups.

I've got a 2000, and my bottom end had issues. I bought an engine complete from SST and it bolted right in and all the electrical was the same, the new eng is an 03.

I'm putting an 04 swingarm now (getting it p-coated next week) and I can tell ya it fits. I had an 00 in one hand and an 04 in the other and there is a significant weight diference. It seems like older model DS had a better rear shock however. It had two springs, while newer ones have one spring. I'm assuming there is a weight difference in the rear shock as well.
