1996 454 bear cat problem
#1
Well the problem started about a month ago when I noticed some gas on the floor below the air intake of my ATV so I cleaned out the carb the needle value had some dirt on it but after cleaning it I figured the problem would be fixed. After that I changed the oil since it had been about 7 months since I did that I noticed the oil smelled like gas, I knew a little gas is common so after changing oil it ran good for two weeks then last Thursday I came out after riding it about 5 miles the day before to again see a big pool of gas on the floor so I then went and bought a new needle value and seat. However I also pulled some oil out to see if it already had gas in it and it did. So my question what would cause this, piston rings? and one other thing after changing the needle value and again changing oil I ran it for awhile in the garage and it appears while it is running there is a slight drip of gas coming from the crank vent(not sure if this is what the tube vents but it appears like it) the vent enters the intake right after the air filter. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Andrew

Sounds to me like you may need to rebuild your carb with a KIT, so that you have a new needle, gaskets etc. (Or maybe even a new carb).
You can also make sure that from your tank to the carb the supply is shut off when you park it in your garage. (Turn gas off).
If your piston rings were bad then there would be more chance for oil to be in the gas mixture, (smoke when running).
There probably are a number of ways that gas can get to the crankcase, but the most common is a flooded situation or if the engine is not running and the carb is leaking gas into the engine and seeping down past the rings.
Hope this made some sence and possibly helps.
Good luck

My bearcat had the same problem and it was a rubber seal in the carb. ( not the float or whatever the dealers will tell you) Order the parts from alpha sports and replace the needle and the needle jet and you will fix the problem. I appoligize for not having the part numbers to give you but there is a great breakdown on the alpha sports site. My needle jet was so worn that I had no power and continually loaded up plugs. A couple times to the dealer with no fix so I bought a manual and did the reasearch on this site and fixed it myself. You can do the same. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will look over the carb again I put in a new needle and seat, however still have the problem I need to check the float level better if it looks good I will go through the manual again and make sure the carb is together correctly.
