no torque at low rpms??????

no torque at low rpms??????
why is it that when i mash down on the throttle the engine will die and if i just ease into it i cant take off because the engine has low torque? i got about a foot of snow last night and went to play in the snow, what the heck i could bairly get the tires spinning at first but when it was reved up it seemed ok, power wise.
