ATV For Dog Sledding Workout?
#1
I have a set of 6 Siberian Huskies that love to run, so I came up with a bright idea. I don't know how bright of an idea I will think it is after I get out of the impending hospital visit once I'm done. I have never owned an ATV, I have either used my 4X4 truck, 4X4 Wrangler or 4 hooved horse. None of the preceeding would work with the dogs though. Anway, I need something that is not going to be too heavy for the dogs to pull, but not too light that they can take off. I don't want to asphyxiate them either. I need something that will let them run at a steady rate and not be jerky. Would a manual work better than an automatic? Would 4wd work better than 2wd? Do I need to worry about engine size? If so, what would be recommended? I won't really use it for anyting else except exercising the dogs. Once in awhile I may use it to take a bale of hay back to one of our rear pastures though. Any ideas on what to go with? Any suggestions on what to avoid? Thanks for the insight.

Just for something cheap to work the dogs, maybe look for a rolling chassis,or a sport quad with a bad motor, I recently sold an old Blaster minus a motor, to a guy who wanted to work his sled dogs, it had working brakes, and good tires, so all he wanted was something he could steer and slow down for corners, or if the dogs got going too fast. An empty frame could be loaded down with extra weight ( beside the rider) to increase the workout. Pulling a complete quad in neutral would work fine ,too, and then you would have a quad to drive when you wanted. I don't think a 4x4 would roll that good, even empty, unless some models roll better than others, but I've pushed my Wolverine around the yard, and I wouldn't put that kind of load on some dogs, unless they were real big ones. Maybe a Warrior, Blaster, 300 or 400ex or something like that you could pick up cheap, and put a small hitch on the back and pull a small trailer for bale hauling. The nice thing about the Warrior and 300ex is they both have reverse, pretty handy around the yard, and the 300 is very light for pulling by dogs, the Warriror is a bit heavier, but would pull a lot more trailer weight.
