Default 2000 honda 500 4X4

Hello all we are really new to the whole world fo four wheelers.... We just picked up a used 2000 honda 500 4X4 and the rear shaft seems to be turning but there is no power to the rear wheels. Only the front wheels seem to be turning. Any suggestions on diagnostic.

No we believe that it is a fourtrax 450. The rear wheels engaged when we loaded the atv onto the truck but when we got it home the rear wheels were not engaging, it was being driven by front wheels only.

Okay we have investigated a little further. this is a 2000 honda fourtrax 450. the ring and pinion in the rear diffirential in turning with the motor but the rear axle does not spin. This happened very quickly. We loaded the atv into the truck and everything worked just fine. Once we unloaded it and started it back up this started happening. Any ideas, we bought it last night and the guy we bought it from is willing to take it back or help with the repair bill.

There was a post just like this the other day. Same machine I think. I'll see if I can find it.....

Do the gears look good? Not stripped or anything?

I think the ring gear is splined onto the axle (???). The splines might be stripped, so it is slipping. The oil in the gear case sould be full of metal shavings if that is the case.
