Oil change question (IMPORTANT!)
#1
All -
Now I really feel like a newbie asking
such a dumb question BUT since my
buddy's are more mechanically inclined
(so previous thought) than me! They
missed may have missed this step in the
Polaris recommended step by step Oil
change process. Yes I read the little white
paper that came with the kit, step by step.
Question: Do you empty the cup amount
of Oil from the CrankCase side (right
side, bottom) for the Sportsman's 450?
I think the deceiving part is that you empty
the left side Oil reserve (tank) and believing
that is equivilent to like one's car oil pan BUT..
still one more to go on the crank case side.
And probably more important any damage or
impact if you did or didn't?
Just checking, please let me know! Thanks!

if you go by polaris recom. your suppose to drain the hoses and clean the screen and the engine as staated as well as the cup in the crankcase.

I got my first oil change done yesterday and I asked him about the process. He said that the recommended way to the shop mechanics by polaris is to drain the plastic tank and with the drain plug out run the engine for 30 seconds to purge the crankcase into the plastic case to drain it out.
thats what he did on mine - I took it in for the first one but I will be doing the rest and I prob wont do it that way.

I drain the bottom out of the engine also......More oil than I though was in there!!!!!.....Also the screen I did not take this apart and clean yet ...I will after every third oil change..
.......Oh..BTW....The Polaris oil change kit comes with the two new washers.......Use them!!!.....They are important......These will become flat and may not seat properly if used over and over.........two or three times may be alright.......But I would not chance it.................They seem too cheap to keep using them!!!...Caper.........

Wheeew! Well I am glad I asked. I thought
that this was the case (no pun intended,LOL).
Well I think I will take Caper's approach, I will
drain the crank case part on my next oil change.
I did that step though most recently on my
wife's 450. And as far as the screen on the oil
pump hose, its not easy to get to, I couldn't
find a wrench to fit it, again I will wait till the
next one, when I did it on mine (1st Oil change)
wasn't really anything on it to wipe off (pretty clean)
Ohh yea Caper I agree, use those washers
I didn't forget those, thank God!
On comment to Brutus, not sure if I would
feel comfortable running the engine like that
empty to push the oil over to the plastic
oil tank, I will leave that to a very expertied
professional for fear of doing damage.
But of course I usually take the safe road
anyway.

Caper,
You reminded me of my flashing wrench
icon on mine. I changed the oil and it is still
there. I went over my bike pretty good, checked
all fluids etc. no noises or anything apparent as to
what it could be. If this ICON is a service reminder
what can I do to clear it?
And to add to that is there some diagnostics
like on the dast etc. that I can check to make
sure my bike's computer is not reporting any
technical problems? (this should be a new posts,
thanks for your time!)

The steps are in your owners manual.....But here they are:
1.first you need to get in Diagnostic Mode..
2.turn key switch off and wait about 10 sec.
3.set the park brake and shift the lever to neutral
4.hold the mod/reverse override button and turn key switch on.
5.release the switch as soon as the display is on.
Now Scroll to screen 5.....This should show____00
This is your Programmable service interval
You can check this out on page 44 of your owners manual........If you don't have one..Just let me know...........Caper......
