Default Stripped out bolt hole in rear end Honda Recon

2004 Honda Recon ES.

Friends son took out drain plug for rear-end - dont ask me why.

When he put it back in it went in crooked and messed up the threads
in the rear end.

Could this be re-tapped?

Any other ideas.

I'm afraid of getting metal shards in the rear end if I have to drill it bigger and go with large bolt.

After you drill and tap it, you can just flush it with lots of oil to get out any shavings.

Another thing is to add grease on the tap and clean the tap several times as you cut the threads. The grease will hold the chips on the tap. Then as reconranger suggested flush.

Hypoid gear oil SAE 80W90

You can purchase 8 oz containers at your honda dealer.

I would have to look in the owners manuel for the amount needed but I am not near manuel at this time.
