i've been riding on a borrowed or rented ATV for the last year or so. I finally scraped enough $ together to get a second hand 2001 Arctic cat 500 Manual shift. Seems like a good machine. I'm concerned that it has no mechanical/foot brake. Was this common?

 

Not sure, maybe the guy took it off and chucked it like I did with mine. A rock broke the brake pad housing twice (got caught between wheel and housing), and the second time it also locked my wheel so bad that it broke an axle. I never used it anyway and when I did try it, it was very weak braking. Probably used more for holding you in place on a hill while you change grears.

I beleive that the only atv's that have the mechanical foot brake are those with a split brake system, one handle for front and one for the back, of course the foot brake would only work the rear brakes. You've got a good machine, with it being a manual it's almost bullet proof in water.

I am the master blaster and there ain't nothing fast but disaster. Sitting here like tootie fruitie always ready to do my duty, singing oooh poopie doo I am ready for you. Laugh and joke, drink coke, eat french fries, wear fancy ties, but I don't mess around....

 

I took it out to Harlan Ky last weekend and it did great! As a matter of fact it went through a hole that my buddys brand new Polaris got stuck in! haha
The manual foot shifter took some getting used to but it works fine.

The only problem is the fan motor may be shorting out or something is up with the wiring because it kept popping the fuse and would tend to overheat sometimes.
