I unscrewed the bolt on the bottom of the atv and it shot out when a 6 inch spring came out of the hole. After the spring fell out a long cylinder came down and stopped when it hit the frame. What is this? Did I unscrew the wrong bolt? It's the one on the opposite side of the dipstick just in from the foot peg. The manual shows this to be the oil drain bolt. No oil came out. Any help will be much appreciated.

Yes you did unscrew the wrong bolt. No big deal. What you need to do is unscrew the bolt on the right (meaning on the same side of the dip stick)

I did the exact same thing on my sons atv.. It's tricky, but it will all go back together.. Just keep force on the spring, while trying to get the bolt back in...
