Default Smoking--NO Fan!

Ok, everything ran great on the 4 hr. ride i took friday! Cleaned up the quad saturday, i mean really washed it, cause we rode in a lot of mud. Then when i started it back up, it was really smoking ALOT! I let it warm up and then rode around in 2nd gear for about 15 minutes, before the temp. light came on. NOW, the light won't go off! I tried putting the 2 fan wires together so it would just stay on, but it won't come on at all. Did I just burn up my fan motor or what? Why would the fan not working cause the temp light to stay on? I just don't understand!

Thanks for reading and thanks for any ideas!

I don't know if one of the fuses under the seat is bad. It's a start..

Your oil light is on because you got water in your oil pressure sensor, and it burned up. Replace it and you will be fine. I would also bet your fan is just dead. Both issues are pretty common.

To see if the fan is burned up either take it off and wire it just to the battery really quick to see if it turns over or try and use a multimeter and get some readings...My guess to you is you got water in one of the connections and thats your problem so don't forget to use dielectric in the connections so you won't have this problem in the future...Also check the fuse under the seat just for the heck of it.

the oil pressure sensor or the water temp sensor either one can have the red light on - to determine which one is causing the light to be simply unplug one of them and see if it goes out, if not unplug the other. whichever one makes the light go out when unplugged is the one causing the light to be on. then you can move on from there...

oil pressure sensors fail all the time, if that one is the cuplrit and you are sure you have oil pressure and not a oil pump priming problem replace the sensor, they are about $8.

if its the water temp switch causing the light to be on then first find out if it is really overheated. if the light is on even before the bike is warmed up then obviously its not overheated so replace sensor.

and yes use silicone based electrical grease on plug connections as suggested.

jumpering the two wires on the fan switch together should make the fan turn as you have tried, providing the fuse is not blown. it is under the seat, one fuse is the main and the other is just for fan.

if you need a new fan, they are $53 shipped from The-Fan-Man.com, do not pay high dollar prices for these fans, they are very inexpensive in reality. OffRoadWarehouse.com also has them, around $65
