Do I need a tork wrench
#5
Okay, 85% of your quad is a torque spec. so go out and buy yourself a cheap torque wrench for about $20 bucks, then do the job right instead of playing the guessing game.
You know the thing is going to have 101 other uses on your quad so its worth every penny to buy one.

If you don't have one, don't worry, tires are not critical. However dont' tigheten them down as much as you can. Find out what it shouodl be and try to guess. Generally torque is measured in foot-pounds, which means that if your wrench was one foot long you would apply that many pounds to the handle.
Wheels are cars are generally about 100 lbs. Going too high can do damage. (If you tighten the nuts in a star patteren it is much less likey to do damage, if you don't even a torque wrench won't prevent damage) I'm not sure how a quad relates. as I haven't worked with my wheels much.
Don't touch the engine or transmission without a torque wrench. If you have a torque wrench use it for everything you can find with torque specification. If you don't have one, you don't strictly need it for minor stuff, but I recomend it. Put it on your birthday wishlist, unless you need to tear into something critical before then.

If I were you I would get a torque wrench. Don't just go out and buy a cheap one. I would suggest buying a click type and not the one with the pointer indicator. Always reset the wrench to zero after EVERY use, this will eliminate the need for frequent recalibration. Torque specs are put in the manual for a reason, overtightening is very common and will cause parts to distort, and I think you know what undertightening will result in. Always use the specs, you will be happy you did in the long run.

Talking about tork specs.....
OK fellow 400ex'ers... What does th shop manual say for the head pipe. I'd buy the book but it's my buddies quad. I still ride the "king" of all time.
PS...any tips on jetting ? Should he do a stage 1 or 2. He put on a FMF Cherry Bomb Header, with powercore muffler. K&N Precharger. No other work planned for tghis quad. Live at sea level, ride about 50% here and 50 @ 3000 ft elevation !
