Default sportsman temp light

I just rebuilt my 96 sportsman, how to i make sure my hot light is in fact working? it seems that my fan is coming on more than it used to. Also, should the fan blow on the motor or blow on the radiator. When the fan is on i can feel air blowing through the radiator, is this correct?

The fan sucks the air through the front of the radiator blows the hot air towards the motor. If you can find the coolant temperature sensor take it out and put it in boiling water. It should come on. I have a temperature gauge kit on my 800 SP. The directions on the temperature gauge kit says that the fan should kick on at 195 degrees and the fan will kick off at 180 degrees. And my fan does this with amazing precision. It never lets the temperature get over 195 degrees. At idle my fan will drop the temperature from 195 degrees to 180 degrees in about 30 seconds in 90 degree weather.
