How do you know when it is time to change a belt.

I'm not sure if there is a better way but my belt actually frayed and you could hear it, it sounded like a rythmic ticking almost. In other words I waited until myine was junk there is probably a better method but I knew right away it was an obvious sound. Not sure if that helps you or not.

The cover is right by your left ankle if you are sitting on it. It kind of sticks out. You might have to remove the breather on top first, generally clamped on with something. There is a gasket in there though to keep out water so if you remove the cover to inspect it you will need a new one. Like I said there was a real obvios loud noise coming from my belt when I would drive in gear. If you don't hear anything and it works fine it should be ok I think but I'm not sure. I believe a gasket was like $13 or so if I remember right and the belt was $30 maybe but idk that was a while ago. Might not hurt to just change it though it wasn't that hard. What kind is it and how old is it?

I have a 2004 sportsman 700. Mine seems to be good. I am just looking ahead. I am good aobut runing mine in low range when under a load or pulling and keep the speed down. i guess that is what is hard on them if you dont put them in low when towing or under a load.

the gasket is $20.00 and the belt is nearer $60 to $80.00 it will start slipping or like he said just come apart. polaris says their a life time warranty(what ever thats suppose to mean) and dont need replacing. your doing the right thing by running in l. range which helps preserve the belt life alot. just my .02
