I have a 2003 DS, just over Mem. weekend i noticed it burning oil, could smell it and also when i was on it hard it would smoke. Im not real farmiliar with the DS motor but my guess would be the rings? I had the valves adjusted last fall at a dealership and i rode it mabye 3-4 times throughout the winter, i noticed in the winter on real cold days below zero i had a very hard time starting it so i would spray ether through the air filter and it would fire right up, and as long as it was warm it would start fine. I forgot to mention its all stock, i guess my question is what my next step should be? Im guessing a compression test?

 

Have someone do what is called a "leak down" test. Any motorcycle shop can do them. Just don't get sucked into them ordering you a bunch of parts.

If it were me, I would pay them to do that and post the results in this thread.
