SP 500 starter removal is there a better way!!!
#1
I have to remove my SP 500 2001 starter to clean it or replace it. My "Clymer" manual states to take off the clutches and remove the back plate belt housing . I tried the "remove the air box" method and got off the top starter mounting bolt but the bottom bolt backs out until it hits the back clutch housing plate but it wiggles but has no room to come out. It is like if the bolt head was just 1/16th thinner it would be a easy job.
I can't say I tried to force the bolt best I can because I needed the ATV for a fishing trip the next day,so I just trew it back together. Should I try it again by just removing the air box again or do the clutches have to come off?

Not sure of the differences between yours and mine, but on my 05 400 I just removed the primary clutch and was able to remove the bottom starter bolt by pulling out on the back plate after removing 2 phillips screws that hold it on. No way the bolt was coming out without moving the back plate.

So you just take off the back plate screws behind the primary "only" and that gave you enough room to ply out the front of the back plate to remove the bottom starter mounting bolt? The back plate is flexable enough to bend it out without removing all of its holding screws?
What a bunch of Sh## to go through just to remove one remaining bolt that holds a starter that is lengendary for having to come off and be cleaned of rust or replaced all the time.

That's correct.
