well if thats the riding you want to do then the efi is perfect for that. you'll here over and over that a belt drive will slip in deep water.and they will if you don't put a snorkle kit on them, and make sure everything is sealed really well.recently had mine under water, one hand grip and snorkle only thing left above water, was floating till got the winch to a tree.sounded like tommy chong there for awhile. all in all it never missed a beat.

Arctic Cat is a good mud machine, with the highest ground clearance

I would say a Big Bear 400. Mainly because of the clutchless manual so you don't have to worry about water getting in your CVT box. It also has true on command diff lock, none of the Polaris "engage 4x4 once the rear slips" crap.

If you're strictly speaking between the 500h.o. and 800 i would definently go for the 800 if you want a mudder. A few friends and i get together every now and then to do some mudd bogs and the 800s are hard to beat. there were about 3 500 h.o. 's and the 800 went roosting by them in 2 wheel drive while they were stuck in 4wd.

You want to sink it in mud and water AND have it come out running, go with the BigBear. BULLETPROOF machine since 1987 (that's 20 years for the mathematically challenged)!

PROs
Sealed multi-plate rear brake
Sealed semi auto transmission
Air cooled (no rad to clog up)
Super low 1st gear (turns big tires with no problem)
IRS
Diff lock
No fancy electronics to screw up!

CONs
Not very fast on the open road.
