97 Trailblazer grinds under load. Unable to isolate
#1
Hey guys. Brand new to the forums here. Just bought a used 97 trailblazer. The issue that I'm having with it is that when I have it up on a jackstand and in fwd it will accelerate just fine. When I'm sitting on it trying to ride it, it grinds intermittently. I've switched the chain tension to just about every setting and that doesn't seem to be the issue. I took the chain off and put the bike in neutral and was able to free spin the drive shaft without any noise. The belt on the clutch is in great shape. I have no ideas on where to go from here. If any of you have any experience it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That sounds like it might be the silent drive chain in the transmission. My old Scrambler would do the same in reverse and that solved my problem. The chains are cheap, but fairly labour intensive to remove the trans.

Well it sounds like a good start anyhow. I can't find any other things to try. If anyone else has an idea shoot it my way. I'm willing to entertain all! Thanks again scrambler!

Just an update for those of you that helped me.
I took the chain off and was working towards getting the tranny out of the bike today. Upon inspection of the output shaft some yokel bead welded on the splines where the sprocket should be sitting. The sprocket sits in between the splines and the case. Appears there is some small scoring near the output shaft entrance into the tranny. The sprocket can move freely which I think means that under load the sprocket/chain have been moving and rubbing against the case causing this noise.
I'm going to break the case open tomorrow hopefully to see if anything else is wrong internally and if not, I guess I'll be grinding the weld off the output shaft to remove it and get a new one.....250 bucks though oy! (I know you're all jealous of my predicament)
