Used 05 LT80 Clutch question
#1
I have a pretty extensive mechanical background, but I don't know much about this particular bike and clutch. I ride at Spinreel and Sand Lake Oregon, for those who know where that is. I have a few problems, and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I bought a used KFX80 last year for my daughter, it's an 05. She weighs about 45lbs, pretty petite. The guy had a FMF pipe put on it, and had it jetted. I added a K&N filter and outer ware to it. It seems to run good, but if my daughter is stopped on an incline, it won't climb it. We ride mainly in the sand, and have Gekos on the rear. There is a small hill that has to be climbed to get to the dunes, and if she keeps up the momentum, it's fine, but if she stops on the hill, I have to get off mine and push her to get it going.
I was thinking that the clutch needs to be adjusted. I have read a few things about these clutches on this forum, including the article on atvoffroad about how they work. I'm hoping you can give me an idea where to start on the clutch weights. It sounds like the RPMs are able to get high enough, but that's why I'm asking you. I was thinking that they probably never had it adjusted after they modd-ed it. These people seemed to be no where near mechanicaly inclined; they paid someone to install the pipe and jet it. What do you recomend as a starting point? Is it normal for it to not move on a hill? Seems to me it should have more grab, but let me know.
Thanks

Sounds that somthing is wrong with your clutches. Take off the left cover to inspect your primary and secondary clutches. May just need cleaning, or parts ( rollers, belt, secondary pads). either way you will have to inspect it to find out. With high rev's you should be moving some. Pretty easy to remove the foot gaurd plastic and loosen the foot peg to get the cover off.

All this knowledge and this is the ONLY response? No one can give me any more help? Thanks for the reply, I will check the things you suggested, but I am suprised at the lack of responses, I figured there were more people on here that had experience with these.

This post probably won't get ya much help from the folks in the know if ya know what I mean. They might be racing or playing or something other than help on demand. Did you try what fixit said? Take it apart & inspect the clutches. Give ya a little more to work with when someone does help you or you might find the problem yourself.
BTW: I live near Sandlake and these things zoom up most any hill there :-)

I was going to reply earlier, but the ONLY responce was correct. I figured I'd let you inspect it and report on what you found like the 2nd accurate reply mentioned.
Yes I went racing. .
I'll give you advise, forget anything that goofy web site tought you about CVT's! LOL
Maybe read some of the 2000+ LT80 reply's I have on here.
The FMF is a grunt pipe, shouldn't be a low end problem.
I'm curious as to what size jets you have in it. Clean the carb and let me know.

had the same problem with our LT80, that thing was a dog, it wasn't the fastest in its class, but hell give it credit the thing started every time and we beat the crap out of it. Got it when I was 10 or 11, been riding 5 years and weve had an Lt80, a Raptor 80, and had 3 Polaris 90s and the Suzuki was the best, always started. BUT, you need to clean the carb out. We had that done by the dealer, and bingo the thing ran like a charm, I think they adjusted the clutch to while they were at it.

Well, my next problem is finding a manual. Is there one available other than the $75 suzuki one?
Thanks for the help, I'm just used to seeing a bunch of replys, not just one; please don't take that the wrong way. In my eperience, there is always 10 different answers, and I was expecting to have to choose.

OK well I got it apart, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or what needs to be done. There is a lot of dust from the clutches wearing in the case, so I can clean that out; but then what? How does it come apart? Does anyone have instructions on how to rebuild these things, what too look for and what is considered worn and needs replacement?
Thanks
Thanks
