A stock 300ex is a bit mild for deep sand, the biggest bottle neck to power is the stock rev limit in the cdi, it keeps you from revving out in the lower gears for more power. For sand, the best bet is a full exhaust (stock head pipe is half the size of aftermarket) better filter with modded air box lid, rejetted and a modified cdi to get the new power to the ground. My son ran his modded 300ex at Silver Lake dunes, we tried it with Gecko rear tires, and it did fine, but seemed a little down on power for the big hills, he tried it later with a good set of knobbies, and was able to go faster and spin more, I think too much traction is worse than a little slip, it bogs the little motor down too much. An aftermarket oil cooler wouldn't be a bad idea, either, to keep overheating problems to a minimum in deep sand and warm temps.

How little is your brother???? The 300 does fine in the dunes, but being a medium frame machine it is really meant for smaller/lighter riders. When I had one, I used it for tight trail riding, and left it home on dune trips. Wish I had kept it, now that my kids are older!

The engine has a fair bit of hop up potential! If it is set up right and has the right rider, it will do ok...
