Default mode indicator 05 Sportsman

I have a 2005 Sportsman 400. We recently had our dog chew through the electrical/taillight assembly and had to replace it. Now the mode indicator (to shift through hours, miles, etc) will not work. Any ideas on how to fix this. Also we did the repair ourselves. Everything else is working fine. No wrenches and no problems with the 4WD or speedometer. We just cant get the mode indicator to switch to hours or miles. Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

welcome to the forum. you are refering to the reverse override im assuming that isnt working, and its not in reverse when your trying it. does the overide still work correctly, meaning you still have to push it for to go fast in rev. and to make the awd work?

1st, THank You. 2nd, The reverse override does not work. When we put it into reverse, and push the button it does not go any faster. It still sputters when the button is down and we go in reverse. Is the part bad, a wire reversed, what could be some troubleshooting options.

the awd must not be working then in reverse as the button controls it and has to be pushed to make it work. you said he ate thru the tail lights near the back of the bike? did you put new wires on or just fix them? was there a ground wire missed or wired to the wring place by any chance? he he chew thru the wires that go to the tranny switch (witch tells waht gear your in) and didnt get wired back right? just a few idears.

The dog chewed through the wiring harness up by the handlebars. We had to replace the whole wiring harness ($283.49). AWD works. The only thing that doesn't work is the yellow button for the reverse speed override. Can't get it to go fast in reverse or when in park or neutral to switch between modes (hours, miles, etc). All wires are connected. Everything else works fine. We just can switch between modes.

well heres the only thing i can think of. you should not have any awd in reverse w/out pushing in the override(yellowbutton) and you say it works w/out pushing it. the tranny switch is fine if you have all the gear indicators showing up when going from l/h/r. either the wires are are hooked up wrong going to the override or you received the wrong wire harness for the yr of bike. does the connection that goes into the yellow button have 4 wires going into it? it should have.when you put the bike in reverse does the awd drive in the display light up w/out pushing the yellow button. it shouldnt.

When in reverse, i push the yellow button and nothing happens. No speed override, nothing. It does not display AWD when I push the yellow button when in reverse. AWD does not come on at all when in reverse whethere I am pushing the button or not. I just can't get it to go into speed override or to switch modes. When I push the button nothing happens. There are 4 wires that go into it. Yellow red green and gray I think. I believe it is the right harness because everything else on the ATV works properly just not the speed override. I know how many hours were on it and appx. how many hours. But that doesn't help because we are trying to sell it so we can get a bigger one and anyone that knows anything about them is going to want to see the hours/miles. So I need to figure it out but for the life of me I have exhausted every option that I can think of. PLEASE HELP IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! THANK YOU!!!!!

so you replaced the whole harness from fron to back, and sure you didnt miss any wire connections. if this worked before then still should. i cant remeber for sure if when i bypassed my override if there was power going to all the wires to the switch or not but i guess you could check that. sorry i couldnt help more.
