Polaris Synthetic Rope Question
#1
OK, so I bought the polaris PURE brand synthetic rope for my quad. I liked the ones I found online, but thought the Polaris one would be just as good. I get it home and look at it, and it is just rope, nothing on the ends. Has anybody used this? I guess my question is, what do I use for the ends, to get a hook on there? Do I use regular cable clamps like steel wire? Or should I take this back and get one with a loop already on the end?
Thanks

Although I wouldn't trust Stendori, (only cause he's from Maine and let his wife buy a low rider) (I'm joking again. It's hard to resist sometimes) I would agree with him. The synthetic rope should come (in my mind) with a metal loop properly spliced into it to hook up the hook. It should also have some kind of metal end to feed into the spool to get it winding tight when you first install it. PS When my wife wanted a new rig after I got a new quad, she went with a Jeep Wrangler. I made her get it with the 32" tires and limited slip rear. (She couldn't be talked into the Rubicon) Just a little bit more clearance than an Avenger.

I bought my rope from Metric Powersports. It came with a metal loop for the hook. The other end for my Polaris winch is just cut clean and wrapped around a small round "puck" that is used on the original cable. Just the rope is no good.

I agree with the others... You should definitely take it back unless you are very good at splicing The rope should definitely have a thimble (the close end metal "u" shaped piece) already spliced snuggly into the rope end. That's where the hook goes and it keeps the rope from being worn through and prematurely failing by abrasion from the hook... The other end should definitely have a terminal type end clamped onto it...that's the part that will go under the screw to hold the end steady when you start winding it onto the empty winch drum.
Can't believe that they would sell the rope in that fashion, it doesn't even have an abrasion guard on it, especially when you can get it ready to go for the same price at other sites...shame on Polaris!
One thing you didn't mention, though, is the fairlead...if you have a roller fairlead that has been used for a while with a steel rope, and has any roughness on it, you should replace it with a new roller type or one of the flat hawse style aluminum fairleads. These ropes don't take abrasion very well...

OK, Thanks everybody. I really couldn't believe this thing once I looked at it. It was just easier to order it while I was getting other stuff from the dealer. It will be going back tomorrow. The quad is new and the only time metal cable is going to go through the fairlead is to take it out. Thanks Again Everybody.
P.S. Nice Avenger...

I bought my synthetic winch rope from Gorilla Winch. It came with the metal thimble in the end to attach the hook to. The other end just fed into the hole in the spool, and back into itself. I will never go back to a wire cable.
I agree with Webslave about the hawse fairlead. IMO, ditch the roller fairlead. I found a Delrin Hawse fairlead on ebay.
