Default Eiger vs Rancher

I'm looking at either the Eiger or the TRX420FM Rancher. The honda seems to be a better machine on paper with EFI liquid cooled etc... but what worries me is the price of the 2 are pretty much the same. I'll be using the machine for half recreation and half farm/hunting type work. I'll be pulling logs with it so I would prefer the solid rear end. I'll also be using it in the snow, and the Eiger has higher ground clearance. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.

thanks

I can only say I've been very pleased with my Rancher TRX420FM, using it exactly as you describe, as seen in my photos.

Is this made to be a work machine? I noticed it doesn't have a low range. It just seems a little cheaper then I would think it should be comparing it to other honda models.

If you going to work a Utility ATV a low range is a must. If you tie two ATVs together in a tug of war even a 44cc dispacement disadvantage ATV with low range will out pull a ATV without low range. I think the Eiger only has a Ground clearance advantage over the 420 due to its 25" tires vs the Honda's 24" and the Large rear drum brake housing is not tucked inside the wheel rim and out of harms way like most ATVs. I would bet most 420 owners would buy 25" tires when it is time for a new set anyways.

The Rancher has a low "granny gear" 1st gear, and a low range is needless, a waste of money, and add extra weight.

The Eigher is only 17 Lbs more than the 420 with a sub tranny and larger tire. Actually weight is a advantage when pulling and plowing with a Utility ATV. My old 450 Foreman had the super low 1st gear only, but many times I wished for a low 2nd 3rd and 4th like my 89 350 Big Bear had.
Its just just logical a 10 speed tranny will offer the right gear for the right situation before a 5 speed tranny can.

Got to laugh about this one. My buddies who have belt drives, have to stop at the bottom of what seem to be every good size hill and put it in "low range", before they can tackle the incline.

Me, I just fly up it is 3rd gear. Never can figure out what the big deal is.........
