what is a reasonable price for powdercoating?

 

I had my swingarm, A-arms and frame powdercoated in a blue color with a blue glitter clear coat.

Cost - $250

 

Why do you powdercoat your frame? Does it strenghten it?

 

Powdercoating is mainly for looks, but as an added bonus it adds strength to whatever you coat. I have every possible part on my 400 powdercoated, and I would recommend powdercoating to anybody.

 

It also takes a lot of work to scratch it up. Powdercoat is really hard and last forever if it is done properly. Sure beats Krylon!!!!!!

 

I had mine powdercoated for looks and endurance.

After having everything done, I was trying to install the a-arms. Since the powdercoating is fairly thick, and I was installing new bushings, the arms were a very tight fit.

Not thinking, or throughly frustrated, I grabbed the hammer and wacked away at the arms. After a few hits, I realized what I was doing. But then I noticed, hardly any damage had been done to the finish. I was using a regular metal hammer, hitting the top of the arm without nothing in between. No cracks, only a slight indentation where I hit it with the hammer.

After that I was sold on the strength of powdercoating. A really professional place has many didfferent options for the type of powdercoating. Some are more chemical resistant, and other are more for stress.

 

I have had a couple of racks and towbars for Polaris machines coated and paid $12.00 for the racks and $17 for the towbars. A couple of cans of good John Deere spray pait and primer will run this much. Even if power coat is a little extra I have found it to stand up to large rocks, chains, fence posts and what ever else will fit in or on the rack. Around here they charge by the amount of surface area to be covered and also take in to acount the number of pieces you have.

There is a business in Decatur IL that does a good job at a reasonable price. Send a note if you want the number.

Lasher, $250 is super cheap for all that stuff!!! Where did you get it done? Can you give me a phone number? It is going to cost me $400 for my frame alone if I get any other color than Black and I want the get the metal flake YZ blue. I also plan on having my swingarm chromed which is expensive as well. I won't want to race this thing when I get done!

I called them up and got an estimate over the phone for the frame - $250. I then showed up with the swingarm, a-arms and frame. I actually had all the hubs, but the cost prevented me from having them done as well.

I told them what the quote was, and they said they would try to keep it around that price. And they did.

I asked what colors are available. The reply? "What color do you want?" I told him a nice blue. That is when the guy talked me into the blue base color and the blue glitter clear coat. When I picked it up, it was in the sun and shining like mirror.

I also had 95% of the frame sand blasted. I am not sure if that was part of the price or not. I think the guy told me that they would do sandblast it anyways to make sure everything is off.

Give them a call and tell them Mike Lasher send you. They will probably remember my frame color more than the name. I will back this winter, after I get my frame strengthened.
