Im putting a new piston in my honda foreman 400 and dont know where the top rings go..i mean what ones go where..one has a tapper on it the other doesnt..and one looks a little wider than the other

 

The chrome ring is the top ring .. The black ring is the second compression ring .. And the "T" goes up ...

 

well there both kinda black..but one has a slight bevel on it.is that the top one

 

 

OK im pissed..I just put new piston and rings in and the thing still smokes bad..no blow by in the case vent thought..does it take a brake in time for the rings

 

I have to assume that you had the cylinder properly honed before installing the new rings.

I would also assume that you properly spaced the ring end gaps upon install.

I also assume you oiled the piston and cylinder for assembly.

If this is not a job you have done before, it is very easy to break a new ring installing the piston into the cylinder.

There should be little to no break in time required. After assemble it should not smoke, HOWEVER, if the exhaust was full of oil from the previous engine damage it can over an hour of normal riding to burn that out. So, if your confidant that you done a good job on your rebuild, ride it for a while, and see if it quits smoking, if so, it was just oil in the exhaust. Like I said, that is normal on one that has had a badly blown engine before.
