Default Sportsman 600 Front AWD p[roblem

I am having a problem with my 2003 Polaris Sportsman 600. I cannot get the front end to engage in AWD in low or high gears. It will engage in reverse with either the override switch on or off. The AWD handlebar switch appears OK along with its indicator that lights up. Every function on the speedometer appears to be working properly. I recently changed the lubricant in the front and rear gearboxes with Polaris synthetic lube. I was told that there is a procedure for checking front end engagement problems and I wonder if someone might have a Polaris service manuel and send me the directions for checking out the front end. Thank you.

you said it works correctly in reverse w/out pushing the override in?? its notsuppose to lock in w/out pushing the button in reverse. sounds like the awd is fine and its more of a tranny switch or override problem.

Sorry sten but reverse overide just disables rev limiter in reverse I thought. I might be reading your post wrong though.

Mink what do u mean on or off? It should engage in reverse period. so when u shift into high or low from reverse it has no 4x4 then? but AWD is on still? what does pod indicate when u shift?
Can u do self diagnostic on pod? It has screen that tells u if AWD switch is working?
I'm not familar with 03 models so I hope its the same and some helps ya

you did read it wrong or i typed it so i was wrong. after 5 sportsmans i think i would know that much lol. i think he said the awd drive was working in reverse w/ the override not pushed which we all know is not correct. but as always i could be not understanding him correctly.

Thanks for your replies and help Sten and Doscelo. I can get AWD in reverse with either the overide switch pushed in or not pushed in with the AWD switch on.
If I shift to low or high from reverse with the AWD switch still in the on position, the front wheels will not engage for AWD. How do I diagnose the pod to see if the AWD switch is working properly? I wonder if there might be a problem with the overide switch. Thanks again.

this is on mine but its been same for couple years now. put in n and lock hand break on, then push and hold overide button down, turn key as u hold button and when u see display light up release button and it should give u a voltage reading first from battery.there are couple screens to get thru. push overide button to change screens until screen says Off. flip awd switch to on and screen should say on turn awd off it should flip back to off on screen. to get out of diagnostic just shut key off. if u dont get screen that says voltage try again in 20-30 sec but hold overide until display lights up when u turn key then release as soon as screen lights up

his is an 03' which i think has a differnt speedo set up so im not sure if its totally the same or not as our newer ones. i read somewhere that its a little differnt in the dia. mode. if the awd is working in reverse then it has to be a switch problme that im guessing. like i said its not suppose to work w/out pushing the override button in reverse. let us know what you find.

Thanks again for your help. I made the tests that you recommended and I was able to get the voltage screen first (11.5 volts) and the second screen had a square type symbol with Pr SSr. I was not able to get the screen with the OFF in it with several different tries. Do you suppose there is a problem with the overide switch?

I would also make sure you have the right oil in the front end. Mine would also engage when it was not supposed to, it was the oil all along. AWD Switch on or off. Just something to check.
