Hey I got a 04 400ex and I want to make it faster. Im on a very small budget and I want to get the most bang for my buck. Thanks!

 

Exhaust (and jet) and filter are where you always start.

 

A savy rider will do rims/tires and suspension, before they make it "go faster".

 

I agree with the rims/tires. Looks better and gets you a little wider avoiding tippyness. I always disagreed with the suspension bs. I mean why? If your not a professional racer (and obviously your not on a 400ex) wheres the need?

What I'm saying hjmdoo is that make it "go faster" mods will make it more fun to ride as well as make it sound and look better. Suspension mods will, well make you take those turns in that trail faster and uh, absorb jumps better?

But, don't listen to me apparently I'm not a "savey" rider.

 

So Koopa, what brands of exhaust and jetting should I get? And should I get a slip-on or the full system?

 

Well hjmdoo it kinda depends on you budget. When my bro got his ex we watched www.denniskirk.com clearance and picked up a white bros mx-4 for about 50% off. Couldn't beat it. He also got a fmf powerbomb header to go with it. HMF is also a pipe alot of people seem to like that usually have good price's. But, that's one of those questions you'll get all different answers to. I'm just trying to give you the cheaper ones I know I'd be interested in.

Alot of times the pipe's will come with the recommended jet. I bought the dyno jet kit and regreted spending that kind of money. Jets are very cheap. Also, pick up a uni filter and remove you airbox lid.

For most bang for the buck get a slip on silencer, remove stock snorkle, and rejet. Depending on type of riding you do, you should also do something with airbox such as removing air box lid and installing prefilter over foam filter. If you do lots of mud or strictly sand then do something different with air box.
Forget the full exhaust system. This will actually loose power for first half of power band because full systems all use larger header pipe and are primarily beneficial for built up motors and mid to top end power.

 

could a guy go up one tooth on the countershaft sprocket or would that rob too much take off and not keep it the wheelie machine that it is known for ?

I can tell ya from experience SherpaT350 that going up a tooth makes it one pain in the ars if you do serioius trail riding or hill climbing.
