I have a 2003 Sportsman 700. I just bought a Polaris Oil change kit for a 700. The oil filter that came with the kit is #2540086. My 2003 600/700 service manual calls for oil filter #2540006. Are these two interchangable?

The 2540006 subs to the 2540086. It's correct.

I just found in a 2004 700 parts manual that #2540006 should be used on engines manufactured before 10/02/03 and #2540086 on those after 10/02/03. Not doubting your answer just curious as to why the different part #'s.

I don't know why the production date made a difference. It COULD be a different supplier, different micron rating in the filters, etc. Not sure. I don't recall any literature on the change so i can only speculate. It will work though and won't hurt anything.
