Custom Scrambler 400 or 500?
#1
I'm debating if i should buy a 500 or a 400 scrambler. I'm looking for something that has alot of power, i come from a snowmobile racing background so i'd love something, somewhat compairable in power and speed.
I'm leaning towards a 400 because its so easy and cheap to do modifications with. I've looked into Hot Seat Performance's Polaris 400-440cc Big Bore Exterminator Kit,
http://www.hotseatperformance.com/psp/showdetl.cfm?&DID=29&Product_ID=2881&CATID=248
which runs in at around 70 Hp on pump gas which seems ideal.
My only concerns are...
How will the engine hold up (they say its reliable) ?
Since i plan on throwing an Xplorer tranny into the mix for low range, How will the tranny hold up? How will the 4x4 system hold up?
Another brainwave i had was possibly throwing in a 440 or 500 Twin engine w/ VES out of an sled that i have lying around. But, ofcorse the same questions come up about the engine handling the heat (should be fine with a rad i'd think) and the tranny/drive train handling the extra strain. I'm also wondering how the motor mounts are going to look like on this and how nicely the engine would fit with such limited chassis room.
Feel free to weigh in with comments/suggestions
Thanks

Personally I would like to build a Scrammy with either an IQ 440 or an XCR 800. Either something that could be practical or just insane. One or the other. But to make it easy, I would probably stay with the 400.

Indeed i will take some pix of whatever i end up deciding on doing.
I'm still doing research, sadly there doesn't seem to be much info on this subject matter.
I still have major conerns on engine and drive train reliability.
There must be a few of you out there with 60+ HP 4x4 scramblers who can offer some consultation.

When I work for a dealer we "Trail Modified" a Scambler 400 with a Hpd port, polish, pipe and silencer. It screemed and it put out about 58-60 hp.
The 4wd worked great but I can't say that the low range tranny would or wouldn't hold up but I'd like to know.
As to putting a sled motor in .......I'd stay away just because they are built tighter for power and for the very cold season. Not to say you couldn't do it but you probably will fiddle with it more than ride it.
I know Hpd has some HIGH Power motors under there belt....

Being a mechanic by trade i can't see there being a major issue with a sled engine over heating. Its still a 2 stroke motor the scramblers stock rad should be more then sufficient in providing enough cooling.
As i said earlier my main conserns are drivetrain duribility and mounting the engine.

I think mounting would be pretty easy. Line up your clutches and make sure the distance is good and weld in some mounts. And my sleds always worked great in the summer running across the lake with only water on the heat exchangers, so I think a rad with a fan would be just as effective. Jetting would be trial and error, but not too bad. As for drivetrain, the stock 4x4 trans has some good sized chains in them so it might be ok. Let us know what you decide

The problem is that sled motors are twin cyl (or triple) so the stock rad probably will not exchange the amount of heat need for a multi cyl.
