can anyone explain to me what the purpose of the exciter coil is? I'm having trouble starting my sportsman 500 with the key switch, it starts fine by pull start. I have been told that by cleaning the exciter coil and the small strip of metal on the flywheel I could take care of this problem. Does this make sense to anyone? I have replaced the starter and the battery. nothing seems to work.
