I'm looking into buying a used 2003 Scrambler 400 that is stuck in reverse. Has anyone run into this problem? I'm hoping to get some ideas on what kind of things I should be looking for to trouble shoot the problem before I make an offer.

does it start moving when it is running @ idle? Most likely it is a stuck cog inside the tranny -- try rolling it and shifting it into neutral.

 

Disconnect the linkage rod at the shifter and see if you can push or pull the rod by hand to get it in and out of gear. If so your linkage rod has to be adjusted.

 

Thanks. I'll try to get a better idea when I go to get it. I have to wait a week before I have any time off........I hope it doesn't sale first.
