TRX300FW Intermittent spark
#1
Hi all,
I have a 1988 trx300fw. Problems started last year while hunting, would run good then just shut off. Did this for a while. In the spring, Ran good never stopped. About 4 months ago it started with intermittent spark, It would spart one time the next time it would not start, no spark at all. Shop told me it was the coil (over the phone)....replaced.... still no spark, Took it to the shop and they said the stator was not putting out enough, had to be replaced. Bought new stator and pulse generator. Still no spark, Had to by new battery also. (nothing drains battery, just time for a new one). Switched cdi unit with my other 300 still nothing, also switched the recitifer, still nothing. Last night, got mad about it, pulled the wire harness off. It looks like Whoever had it before either replaced some wires or rigged it somehow, but everything was connected and all wires had good continuity, cleaned connections and put wire harness back on. nothing, Nutral and reverse switch works.
About 2 weeks ago I took it to a honda shop and had there mechanic look at it, he tested the stator and pulse generator and said they were good (the new ones) Asked me if I replaced the spark plug cap, I did not, he took the cap off and we tried it and it worked. bought new spark plug cap and went home. Put new spark plug in. Ran bike about 10 min. put it in the garage. Next day didn't start. Now back to no spark.
I have noticed the wire for the 88 is not avail.
Anyone with any suggestions. I woulld like not to put a whole lot more money into it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
John
P.S. any ideas what the alarm unit is for?

Did try looking for cut wires somewhere, something that would stop it from firing. Like the kill switch wire or neutral sensor, etc..... Here a website great for parts on all bikes. Including older ones. Click here

I wouldnt think it would be bad if the light comes on. Plus I dont think it would even turn over if it didnt work. Good luck buddy LOL try that powersedge.net site tho cheaper than honda shop for sure

OK, Now I am really confused......I have not touched this bike, and no one else has for about 4 days. I went out today to check out some more wires and it I had a nice bright spark, What would make this thing spark when it hasn't and it was not touched for four days. I dont think it could be a wire. I moved all the wires around and still got a nice spark.
Any thoughts??

I'm not sure, but when I put newa spark plug in mine, it will start the first time, but I will have to let it set for a day or two before it will start again.

I tried a new spark plug (2 new ones actually). Did continuity on all wires, torn the wire harness apart and checked it. I am wondering if it might be something getting stuck in the on off switch. Hopefully, next time it wont spark....... listen to me (LOL) and I will switch it out with my other one and see what happens. Have a electrician coming hopefully wend.
