TRX300FW Intermittent spark
#11
So, I call a local honda dealer and they will check it out for 64.00 diagnose fee. I load it into the truck and try the spark....Of course it is sparking, Now I am hoping it will not be sparking when I get there. I drop it off, told them I needed them to find out why it is not sparking all the time and all I did with it too this point.
They just called me and the tech got on the phone saying it has been sparking a nice bright spark. He said he checked the compression and it is only at 50 pounds and that is not good. even it it would start it probably wont run well at all. But, He could check the valves and do a couple other things to try and gain some compression but it would have nothing to do with the sparking condition. I ask...How much is this going to cost me, he could have it done in about 1/2 so, 32.00. Go ahead and check it then, but nothing else. Not putting much more money into this thing.
My question is......Why do a compression test when it was brought there for intermittent spark???

Hello,
I'm new to the site and also have a spark issue with a 300 trx fwd. I inherited it as a basket case. Originally a 96 with a locked up motor. Bought a 88 motor to put on it. No spark, bought an aftermarket cdi box for a 96 got a single spark then nothing until I cycle the emergency kill switch to get another spark. I was wondering if there was an inherent difference where the cdi box, alarm box, voltage regulator from a 96 bike working with an 88 charging system? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Have the same machine, same exact problem. I have replaced the stator, coil, spark plug, cdi, backup alarm, and pulse generator. Still, it has a mind of it's own, this morning it started just fine, good spark - tonight...it decided against spark again! It is driving me crazy because this machine runs awesome when it is running. And by the way, it will stay running until it runs out of gas, but sometimes will not start up again right away if I shut it off! What did you ever find out about yours?? It is too much of a coincidence that we have the same machine with the same problem.
Thanks,
Kevin

Theres a thought and something I don't think anyone above mentioned checking yet. If your battery is good and the motor turns over, take apart the control box on the bars and make sure that kill switch is clean and functioning properly.

I tried that too, I even took the kill switch out of the equation by jumping a wire across it so it couldn't be in the "off" position. I am stumped.
On another note, today I unhooked the new battery, took the spark plug out, un-plugged the CDI and backup alarm, plugged them both back in, checked for spark and it had nice spark. Put the spark plug back in and it started! If I un-plugged the CDI and Alarm unit and then plugged it in again, someone once told me that it was a bad CDI, but I replaced it not that long ago. One last dumb question, where is the electrical ground for this quad? Is there a wire that simply grounds to the frame somewhere?

This sounds stupid, but it works. My kill switch was in poor conditon and actually fell apart when I disassembled it to clean it. However, all this time I've tried to get more than one spark, I've just been clamping the wires together. I still only get one spark unless I unhook the wires, then retouch them. I wondered if I could get it to fire by touching and untouching the wires while turning it over. Low and behold it started and when it began to start I held the wires together and it stayed running. I did this several times and don't understand why it'll not consistently spark until it's running. But It seems to run fine after I get it started. I actually got pretty good at getting it going, but still need to research how this could be happening. I have a new alarm unit coming, maybe that'll fix the problem.

You and I have the same machine, same EXACT PROBLEM. I can get spark too by switching the kill switch on and off (bright blue in fact), but I couldn't keep it going to start it. Some days it starts, others it won't. When it does start, it runs like brand new and will keep running until it runs out of gas. Replaced coil, stator, pulse, cdi, backup, spark plug, battery, etc. Did you ever find out what your problem was or do you just continue to touch the wires on and off? Was it a ground wire problem or can you disconnect the kill switch part of the machine altogether right from the CDI unit? I am at a complete loss! Help please.
