96 400 sportsman knocking noise?
#1
The knocking noise seems to be coming from pull start area but hard to tell. When i rev it up the noise seems to get less. The bike has lots of power, well for a two stroke 400. I just bought the bike and was wondering if i should be worried. Is this knocking normal, I see some other have had knocking for a long time without any problems. The compression seems fine. I see a nut on the top of the pull start is this to fill some fluid? I have a manual comming from ebay but it is for a 2001 this is a 96, probably won't do me much good.

Mines is a 4 stroke and that hole on top of the pull start is to look at the timing mark.

if ftwflh and myself are right then you want to check it out and replace the worn parts if there real bad. if the clutches has alot of miles then they might be worn some. just a thought.

mine makes the same noise it does sound like it comes from the recoil area and dissapears when you give it gas...im not to worried.</end quote></div>
I have that too, I think its the Bendix drive, the two holes each end of the drive fit into are not a tight tolerance and the bendix viberates.
