I just bought a used 98' Sportman 500 worked fine when i bought it but drove off the trailor at home and it started to act up. Seems as if the rev limiter may be stuck on all gears. Reverse is suppose to do this but all others are not. When i ride it if i push the over ride button it runs like a dream. I have looked into this and people seem to say disconnect the limiter. something about a black wire. It seems like the rev limiter is sensing that it is always in reverse. is there a sensor that may go bad? Any ideas ??

 

It could be the reverse limiter box itself that is bad. There are 4 wires on it. I believe they are green, white, black, and yellow(If memory serves.) Pull the black wire off and it will eliminate it from the system.

Question? Do you gear indicator lights coincide with what gear you have it in? Gear selector switches were a problem around that time.
