polaris drive shaft removal

polaris drive shaft removal
I have a 2005 polaris sportsman 500 HO. Any tips on how to remove the rear drive shaft from the gear case. The manual says to pull sharply outward and replace the lock ring when you install it back. That don't seem to do it. There has to be a easier way. I'm tired of pulling sharply. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
