Default winch trouble

today i had to move my little trailer back a few feet, i figured the quad's winch would work great for it...

i hook it up, begin to wind it in, it gets tight, the quad starts to move a little bit, but grabbs and then i hear a clicking and the winch just stopped...

is there an internal clutch that slips under too much pressure? i didnt think the trailer was anywhere near the 2500 # weight, but without tires it possibly could have been too much.... (it was just the chassis, i took the tires off to fix them both... )

did this do damage? It still wound back up under no pressure back onto the drum....

thanks,
erick

In "Polaris Sportsman 500 HO" what does the H.O. stand for?

Is the solenoid for the winch clicking when it gets a load on it?? Maybe check for a loose connection at the winch, solenoid and battery.

And the H.O.stands for High Output

i was driving through a stream... water up to floor boards... i pulled out and got it high centered on a log.. when i got off to winch, there was steam coming out from where the winch was... but i thought it was lower.... does this mean i fried it?

The steam was probably water evaporating off the radiator/exhaust. If you were tring to pull a BIG trailer thats even near 2000# on ground with no wheels on it, you probably just snuffed out the winch. They may say 2500# but they probably won't pull that much.

ive actually maxed out a 2000, and a 2500 lb winch by pulling until it stopped pulling and when i let off it actually reeled back out a little as the brake couldnt hold the weight and no harm has come to it. you may have a bad contacter(solnoide) where it just clicks. check connections first and tyo make sure no bear wire is touching and grounding it out.

i used it again to move a 8" round long that is roughly 15 feet long out of the stream. it did it without hesitation... go figure... maybe the trailer was just way too much for it.

even if it was too much weight i would still think you could have backed the cable out. as long as it still works but keep trying it often to make sure it doesnt mess up when you need it the most.
