Sprocket sizes for motocross
#1
I have a 400EX and I am wondering what sprocket sizes I should use for MX racing with 18x11-8 rear tires. I am looking for it to holeshot better, and for it to be able to pull out of corners faster. Overall I want it to be quicker, but I dont want to loose them on the straits. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To get a better holeshot and quicker out of the corner, you will need either a smaller front counter sprocket, 1 or 2 teeth, or a larger rear sprocket, prolly 3 to four more teeth. But do not do both! Either one will give you more holeshot power and screaming outta the turns power, but you will lose a bit of top-end. If you dont go to crazy on the teeth it wont affect your top end too much. Have fun...

I have a 400 EX and run 18" Turfs for MX and went to a 14 tooth front sprocket and it comes off the line great in 2nd gear, two races and two holeshots. Don't start in first though, it wheelies too bad, in fact I haven't been in first yet in a race. This with a pipe and a filter has eliminated 2nd gear bog also (Wht Bros E-series with 160 main jet). My went to a 13 front and is on the verge of having to remove a link from the chain. Good luck. Nick
P.S. This was a sunstar sprocket and I had to file the burrs off to even get it on the bike.
