2002 Sportsman 700?
#2
A salesman at my local dealer <Charleston IL> told me that a 700 was coming but would be in a sporty model first. This is not gospel--just passing on what I was told.
When I am sitting on a true sport model Polaris I will believe it, not until then.

Led, I am not starting anythng in any way,but I dissagree. Polaris alredy makes a strong quad in the utility market. Their "sport" market has been hanging there dry for laughs ever since they called their wheelers "sport" models. All I think is that, based on my opinion and what I heard for myself, that Polaris' should or are going to introduce the sport model first.
My dealer told me(back in July) that he thinks the sport model will come out first. He also included that it would be lighter, faster, and have better a-arm suspension.
I also emailed Polaris and asked them "If they are coming out with a new quad for 2002 to compete with the Raptor 660 and the new Kawasaki 650 V?" and they replied:
Thank you for the e-mail to Polaris Industries Inc.
All I can say is YES. We are currently working on some new products for the
ATV market. Please check with your dealer and our website for future
product releases.
Thank you.

Dont get me wrong either tho. I wouldn't want a sport bike. I like my Scrambler, just wish it was a lil lighter tho. :-)

i agree with u that polaris needs a new sport quad. the only reason that i think that the sp700 will come out first is that the sp500 is the bread and butter at polaris. starting in march the kawie650 will be out and this will hurt the HO's sales. the HO's sales would especially hurt if yamaha cam out with a grizley660 with IRS.
polaris cant afford to loose market share in the utility machines so thats why they will make a sp700.
the scramblers arent really in the same class as the raptor,400ex, or banshee. so most of thoes people that drive thoes dont look at a polaris.
i do agree that polaris needs to come out with a "real" sport quad.
maybee the sp700 and new sport quad will come out at the same time.

The word I've heard is that the they are working on the sport machine your talking about. I have talked with a few people and heard different things. On thing is that they tested a 2 cylinder like the banshee except with a way bigger displacment and it totally warped the back end and everything. Then I heard they were working on a big 700 engine. Polaris I think is primarily trying to make a quad that will compete with the new DS650, Raptor, and Banshee. Buy the sounds of it, what ever is being brewed up will be a killer machine. And one thing we all know, is that polaris wouldn't realease something until it killed the competition. Everything I have said may not be true, thats just the stuff I've heard. All I know is I can't wait!!

Can,t imagine a bike with a heavy 700 twin 4 stroke thumper is going to be a serious race bike, unless it just for racing over a large flat desert.

Hey why not a 700 pound 4 stroke thumper as a sport quad? I ride my SP 500 like a sport quad, and I like the weight regardless. Sure I'd like it to be lighter, but if you get down and scrutinize all the stuff that goes into the Sportsman, you'll see why it tips the scales at 700 pounds. Now, if they plant a 700 twin into the same chassis, I will be more than satisfied, how about ecstatic. I could go out right now and plunk down a deposit on a 650 Kawi, but what for? I am sold on the ride of the Polaris, but if Yamaha comes out with IRS and it stays automatic, AND its a twin, well...I'll tell ya...I am open to the next manufactorer who provides for me a BETTER riding quad than the Polaris, and as you can tell, I have not. Need I stay brand oriented, or just make a choice for myself, I think I'll buy what I like. So Polaris, lets get on the ball and put that 700 twin into reality, I'm sure you'll find alot of happy riders here, happy to trade up, that is if you don't price yourself out of the competition.
