do the ports on the piston go up or down?

Quad came with no piston, does the port openings go up or down. It is most likely a stupid question to most!

do the ports on the piston go up or down?

what type of quad?
there should be an arrow on the piston, that will point to the timing chain on the motor or the exhaust one of the two.
