Trouble with smooth shifting on AC 400 4x4 automatic 2003
#1
Hello.
I am having a trouble with my AC 400 4x4 automatic 2003 ATV here in Iceland. I was wondering how i can make the transmission smoother when i have to change from F-N-R, it is realy stiff and when I for exemple shift from nautral to forward it bucket forward. I there anyone who can help me?

is your idle too high. i idle mine down just to the point that the machine will not jump forward. if you do this cold, after it warms up it may need a slight bit more adjustment. give this a try.

Tanks for that mudslinginfool.
but if i would idle it down it would still be stiff moving the shifting ****. A also have a Yamaha 660 Grizzle !05 and i always have to press the brake foot pedal before shifting which is smooth and nice. I can´t se there is some kind of relative unit on the Arctic cat so thats why I am woundering how it can make it smoother.

Havard how many miles or hours do you have on your 2003 AC Auto ?
My 2006 Arctcic Cat 400 FIS Auto was and still is hard at times to go from R to N and F to L vise versa , it help's to lower your idle speed ; and i've heard they get easier as you get more mile's and hour's on you AC Auto !
Are you may need and adjustment of your shifter , i only have about 300 mile's on my 2006 AC 400 FIS Auto and it's still stiff at time's but's it doesn't jerk when i change gear's ; when my shifter feel's stiff at time's i give the throddle a little tap to get to disengauge !
This only happen's on mine when there is pressure on the tranny , mine is alot better since it was new ; but there's time's when you're on a hilll are in a rut it's still hard to disengauge into N from L F or R that's when i hold the brake lightly and tap the throddle to disengauge the tranny !
It's just the nature of the beast , but i've gotten use to mine and it's no trouble for me at all ; but like i stated before mine doesn't jerk when you put it in gear after it's warmed up and ildle's down to the correct idle speed you can't even feel any clutch engaugement at all !
Have you ever gotten water in you belt housing , if so it could've caused belt slippage and need some cleaning and check the belt and clutch ; there's a drain plug on the bottom of the belt housing on my 2006 it's on the right side toward the front bottom of the housing cover on the 2006 year model's !
If you get water inside the belt housing the belt will slip , once you get out of the water you just need to remove the drain plug and rev the engine while you're in the N posstiion ; 3 - or 4 time's untill all the water drain's from the belt housing !
I know the 2006 model has a change in the chassie design , the fuel tank is under rear of quad instead of on top front of quad ; it also has the 6.5 Gallon tank and i've had my 400 in water to the bottom of the headlight's without getting water into the housing but that was when it was new !
It hasn't had the snorkled modded , it's all original and low milage for the model year ; i bought it in feb. 2006 and have less than 300 mile's on it still !
I hope you get your's straightened out !...........

I was also having a shifting problem with my ATV 500CC Artic Cat automatic. It began as a lull between gears and then became difficult to shift; then the shifter stopped shifting. It was as if something within the system broke and now when you move the shifter it does nothing.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem is? I was told by one person it is most likely the cable that goes from the shifter to the transmission.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
