What year Scrambler 400 i have?
#1
Purchased a Scrambler 400 4x4 from a salvage yard a few days ago. I'm not sure what year i have. Its got red plastic but the decals were removed and the front differential is chain driven from a chain from the tranny. I've seen Scramblers b4 but the ones i was used to seeing were shaft driven from the trans to the diff and also the rear disk is not on the axle i think its on the tranny. I dont know bec the parts i need are not there. There is no tranny. There is some type of hydraulic brake line that leads all the way to where the tranny was. I tried looking for the VIN but the sticker that its suppose to be on is scraped in half.

there should be a number stamped into the frame as well and i beleave the 10th diget tells what year it is. somebody posted a chart the other day on what the numbers ment so maybe doa search.

if it is a mid 90s it will have the short vin number and the first two didgits are the year

The vin is probably in two places, on the hood, which could be a replacement hood, but since you can't read it, that doesn't matter. The vin is probably on the frame on the RHS. On my 95 it is on the up/down bar. On the 07 it is on the bar perpidicular to the other one. Anyway, I bet it's on the up and down bar, and you may have to remove some things to see it. It should also have the model number which will tell you the year.
For example on my 95, the model says W957840, so (W95)I know it's a 95. The vin is a 7 digit code. FYI, I think the 40 means it's a 400, and I think the 78 describes the body style.
hope this helps....
