Default 2005 sportsman no 4wd in reverse

I have a 2005 sportsman 800. My 4wd works in forward, but not in rev. I depress the override button, the indicator light comes on,,,for a while it seemed to be spontaneous, but now it does not work at all. Anyone w/ experience here?????

you are pushing in the button and holding it i am sure. remember with a polaris it will not activate 4wd unless the rear tires are spinning.

It could be a broken cage in the front diff. Do a search and you'll find a lot of info. Also check for power and ground where the diff plugs in. If you have power and ground measure the resistance in the diff coil. If it's ok, then I suspect a broken cage.

Thanks for the response. Yes I do hold the button in, Although I did nearly run the battery dead using the winch.

On the engine harness side, you should have 12 volts. On the diff side of the harness put your meter to ohms. If it's open or shorted theres a problem. I don't know the exact resistance but as long as it's not open or shorted it should be ok.

Oh and if your battery is low, it could also cause problems. Make sure it's charging over 13 volts when it's running. If your battery is low using the winch a lot could have an effect on the AWD. I would think it would effect forward as well tho.

I found where the wires plug togethre behind the cowl. I can get a resistance reading from the diff side. The voltage from the switch side is spontaneous. I can't find the same wires going into the switch. (different colors)
