My friend has a 99 blaster, it has good compression due to recent rebuild. it has absolutely nothing at the bottom end, if you weigh more than 160 lbs, you would have to almost dump the clutch to move.... after inspected the reeds, there is a slight gap where the reeds should be flush. is this the whole problem?

 

Very possible. Even if it's not the problem, the reeds need to be replaced because they are not helping matters.

 

any idea what else it could be?

 

So what all was done to it when it was rebuilt? When did the problem start - as soon as the rebuild was done? If the crank new? If not, was the crank bearing checked when the top end was off?

 

he got the blaster for free. it was blown, and the jug was gouged up, so a friend of ours had the stuff that was used for 2 days before his bottom end went out and he just got a race motor. so all that was done was all the top end stuff from the donor motor onto this one (jug, piston) with a good bottom end. so we do not know how it ran before being rebuilt. the stock reeds were horrible so we took the reeds from that motor, which was sitting at a shop for a few months, they are boyeson dual stage, i guess they had got a little warped over time.

 

to give you an idea of how bad its running, my 03 honda rancher out runs it.....yea...that bad.

 

AN 03 RANCHER SHOULD ALWAYS OUTRUN A BLASTER. I HAVE RIDDEN 5 BLASTERS FOR OVER AN HOUR AND EVERYONE WAS SLOWER THAN A BAYOU, RANCHER, TIMBERWOLVE, THEY ARE HORRIBLE THATS WHY YOU CAN BUY A LATE 2000 MODEL FOR UNDER 1000 DOLLARS, THEY ARE HORRIBLE AGAIN GO 4 STROKE.

 

Make sure the gear ratio is not way too high and the rear tires should not be over 22" tall. These will hurt the bottom end. Also the clutches are not slipping real bad are they? Like is it revving high and not going anywhere?

 

no the clutch is not slipping, and he has 18 inch tires on there to kind of compensate for the lack of power. its definitely in the motor, because it does this in neutral. you can feel the lag. and using the trusty butt dyno, it feels only like 10-12 hp at its best.

 

i would start with reeds, carb,air filter, then double check comp . also make sure that the exhaust is not clogged. good luck stock blasters 13 hp
